Are Gwyneth Paltrow and Kourtney Kardashian Business Rivals or Just Good Friends?

With her company Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow has become the subject of way too many jokes, but in my mind’s eye, she is laughing all the way to the bank. Paltrow's health and lifestyle blog/company obviously did better than she expected because the Kardashians looked over her business plan. Even if you think the Kardashians live a shallow life, I know that they are very good at finding business opportunities.

Then started the reality star vs movie star controversy that, honestly, led to several sleepless nights for a bunch of us obsessed fans.

In 2019 Kourtney Kardashian started Poosh, a site about fashion and beauty that she runs herself. People (by people, I mean myself and a few hundreds of people who obsess over the Kardashians) wonder if the brand name is a clever reference to Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop since single-word names are popular.

As usual, there were a lot of comments on Instagram about the Kourtney company. Some of the comments were also typical social media snark that immediately compared the two brands and accused Kourtney of copying Goop’s website style.

It's about getting a name and building a brand, of course. All of the Kardashians know how important branding and awareness of a brand are. There is no smarter way to run a business, and the fact that they already have a lot of fans shows that they are right. I have personally learnt how to build a good following by emulating a few of their branding strategies.

Now, the only thing stopping them is whether or not those fans will think their products are just a knockoff of Goop instead of a unique business idea.

If you look at the Poosh website, you'll notice that there are some differences. Basically, Kourtney is able to stay away from the fake medical claims that Goop was first criticized for. Poosh seems to stick with things that have been shown to work, like natural makeup.

Poosh also tries to get women to look at how the Kardashians usually look, encouraging customers to spend a few hundred bucks on the site for every visit. *cries in guilty*

Even though the Kardashians could probably make more money if they sold cheaper products, Poosh could get in trouble because their logo is too similar to that of the Kardashians. Many people who study the media have noticed that the Poosh and Goop logos look a lot alike, especially in the double O's.

When Gwyneth Paltrow was asked about all this comparison, she responded like a boss! Gwyneth Paltrow doesn't like it when women are put in competition with each other. She said that pitting women against women was patriarchal bulls--t and I couldn’t agree more. She also added that there was enough room for all women to realize their dreams.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Kourtney Kardashian have both tapped into the "well-niverse" with their lifestyle hubs. Squashing all rivalry rumours (and giving us enough opportunity to obsess more) both brands took to Instagram to announce that they are working together on a project that was released in 2021.

"Goop x @poosh collaboration coming soon. Leave your guesses below," Goop's Instagram post said. On Poosh, the caption said, "@poosh @goop: the collaboration we've all been waiting for. Be ready to meet your match," and then signed off with #pooshyourboundaries.

People who watched the teaser for episode eight of The Kardashians (a show about the Kardashian clan’s life) may have already figured out what Poosh x Goop will be about. At the end of the last episode, there was a sneak peek of Paltrow sitting down with Kardashian to talk about the idea of working together. Paltrow said, "I think it's a great chance for two women to work together," and then the clip switched to Kardashian, who said, "Gwyneth has this idea for a collaboration candle called Smells Like My Pooshie."

Kourtney Kardashian said that Gwyneth Paltrow is a source of inspiration for her because the actress has "purpose and positivity." It's not surprising that she chose this candle to hold onto. Travis Barker showed off a candle made for the couple by Goop called This Smells Like Kourtney's Orgasm. The couple isn't shy about talking about their sex life, so the candle was made just for them. Kim Kardashian also got a Goop original after she broke up with Kanye West. It was called "This Smells Like Kim's Orgasm."

How very…normal?

Heretic Parfum, which makes Paltrow's candles, said the original is "an aphrodisiac that's selfish in all the right ways," while the Goop Shop product details say it smells like "tart grapefruit, neroli, and ripe cassis berries blended with gunpowder tea and Turkish rose absolutes for a scent that's sexy, surprising, and wildly addictive."

While you wrap your head around all of this, tell us what you think of both the brands and their products.
