Are Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bongiovi too young to get married?

Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bongiovi, two young celebrities, recently got engaged, sparking a debate on whether they are too young to commit to a life together. While research suggests that the younger you are when you marry, the higher the risk of divorce, it's important to note that statistics don't guarantee success in marriage. As a psychologist, I've worked with people who were over 30 when they got married but still ended up in miserable marriages.

Love is not easily defined or measured, and people are not easily categorized. While statistics may suggest that decisions around love lead to better outcomes when we are mature enough to consider all the angles and know the person we're investing in well, luck also plays a bigger role than we like to think. Relationships can work or fail regardless of age, and high-school sweethearts may end up growing old together just as much as "perfect couples" may end up on battle grounds.

Celebrity marriages are often scorned for their brevity, but there are successful celebrity couples such as Jon Bon Jovi and Dorothea Bongiovi, who have been married for over 30 years. They met in high school and have four kids, including Jake, who recently got engaged. Celebrities may feel more grounded when they get together with partners who knew and liked them before they got famous. They feel loved as a person rather than for their talent or money.

Instead of considering someone's age when they get married, it's more helpful to consider someone's readiness for marriage. Are you able to distinguish lust from love? Do you know enough about the person you are committing to? Do you know enough about yourself as a person and a partner? Do you have a good road map for love? The contents of your "love bucket," or the traits, beliefs, and behaviors you bring into your relationships, don't guarantee a particular outcome. Everyone is capable of change and doing things differently if they commit to it.

Psychologists have seen that negative early experiences don't necessarily mean you'll struggle in relationships. In fact, it may work in the opposite direction because you're determined to remedy the past and create something different from what you've seen or experienced. Conversely, loving parents and a great start in life don't mean relationships will be easy for you. It may even make it more bewildering when things go wrong, or if your relationship doesn't become what you thought it would be. Plenty of people stay in unhappy or toxic relationships for far too long because they have no knowledge of what toxicity looks like.

As for Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bongiovi, they have known each other for a while, with Brown stating they've known each other for "three summers." Bongiovi has inherited a fine model for successful relationships from his parents, but all parents worry, even rock stars. Jon Bon Jovi may have sung about "Living on a Prayer," but he knows as well as the rest of us that it takes a whole lot more than that to make a marriage work.

In conclusion, while statistics may suggest that getting married at a younger age increases the risk of divorce, it's important to remember that love and relationships are not easily defined or measured. Instead of focusing on age, it's more helpful to consider someone's readiness for marriage and whether they have a good road map for love. Everyone is capable of change and doing things differently if they commit to it. As for Millie Bobby Brown and Jake Bongiovi, time will tell whether their relationship will go the distance.
