Cannes is better at fashion than the Met Gala and that's a fact!
The Met Gala is considered to be the biggest night for fashion and it has the best fashion. If you yes Met Gala has the best fashion then hold onto your seats because I am going to change your mind. Although many might argue that the Met Gala has more memorable moments and they would be right let me tell you again I am only taking fashion into consideration anything other than that is irrelevant to our comparative study today.
Now coming to another big question, if the Met Gala doesn’t have the best fashion, which event does? Which event can give the Met Gala a run for its money in terms of jaw-dropping gowns and stunning accessories? So, here is my contender Cannes Film Festival. Trust me by the time you are done reading this article you too will admit that the Cannes Film Festival is better than the Met Gala in terms of fashion.

Let’s start with the Met Gala and its theme for this year which was “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” a homage to the iconic designer Karl Lagerfeld. Before talking about the celebrities and their Met Gala looks let us talk about the designer being honored this year Karl Lagerfeld. There is no doubt that he was an iconic designer but it still doesn’t take away the fact that he also had some very problematic views. And that is why many viewers just like me were baffled when the Met Gala decided to honor a designer with racist, homophobic, and fatphobic views.
I guess Anna Wintour had reasons I am unaware of, but that’s enough about why the theme was chosen and let’s move on to our celebrities attending the Met Gala. Some of our celebrities went all in like Jeremy Pope who rocked the Met Gala red carpet with a 30-foot-long black and white cape that had the late designer’s face on it to Jared Leto who walked in dressed as the designer’s cat Choupette. I’m pretty sure you have seen pictures of Jared Leto dressed as a cat on the internet but if you want to see the 5 most ‘out-there’ looks of Met Gala 2023 then click here.
But I will still consider Jared Leto’s Choupette avatar in line with the theme of the night but unlike the 51-year-old actor, many celebrities failed to follow the theme of the night. Few celebrities played it too safe with only using Karl Lagerfeld’s signature black-and-white color scheme and few showed up on the red carpet with colorful attires.
But Cannes does not have any such themes or gimmicks and that is exactly what gives the Cannes Film Festival an edge over the Met Gala in regards to fashion. And this year Cannes Film Festival has seen looks that can be only described with one word,” stunning”. So, if you are looking for some fashion inspiration then you should definitely check out these looks from Cannes 2023.
For my first pick, I have to go with Ester Exposito’s Atelier Versace. She looked stunning on the red carpet of “Black Flies” in an astonishing Versace with sparkling chain mail and skin-baring slits. She completed her glamorous look with a diamond necklace, rings, and earrings by Messika. Ester Exposito was definitely not the only one who was stunned by her look on the red carpet. Chinese actor Fan Bingbing was right up there with the Spanish star. Fan Bingbing’s red carpet look was a symbol of bravery and strength. She wore a breathtaking gown with tigers printed on it, a true show of elegance by the Chinese actor.
These were mere two of the many breathtaking looks from the Cannes red carpet. And there is still time before Cannes so we have to wait and see what new breathtaking looks come our way. But now coming back to my opinion, the Met Gala may produce more notable moments but when it comes to fashion it’s Cannes Film Festival that takes the cake. Don’t agree with me? Why don’t you leave a comment below, who knows maybe you will change my mind!
