It all started when 52-year-old actress Leah Remini took to Twitter to give the late Lisa Marie Presley a tribute. She wrote, “Thinking of and praying for Lisa Marie Presley, her three daughters, and her mom.” But the heartfelt tribute soon turned sour as conspiracy theorists and anti-vaxxers flocked to the thread. One of them directly questioned by commenting that the late Lisa Marie Presley was “jabbed”. Clearly, it was a tough time for Lisa Marie’s family and close friends and the lack of empathy really pissed off a lot of fans. Fans condemned any and every comment that tried to link her death to covid vaccines.  

Fans were angry and they didn’t hold back their opinions. One person shared his experience of how he encountered a guy that was convinced Lisa Marie Presley’s heart attack was because of the covid vaccine. While he did not confront the terribly misinformed man but he did share his thoughts on Twitter. It went something like,” Ok, you’ve long been a moron. So, when you die, should they write ‘Dumb F***ery as the cause of death on your death certificate?” The fan was certainly angry but I cannot ignore the fact that even in anger the man was straight-up funny. 

While it’s easy to make up a story in our heads and blame something we don’t like, in doing that we often forget that we may be hurting the people who are mourning the loss of a loved one. And that’s exactly what happened. Lisa Marie did have a troubled past having to battle her addiction for years. Her battles with addiction may just be what culminated in her having a cardiac arrest and passing away but people on Twitter were too busy blaming covid vaccines for her demise. Honestly, when I read such comments it angered me too. 

Presley’s fight with addiction was not a secret. Presley herself has come forward and talked about her troubling times. She even wrote the foreword of The United States of Opioids: A Prescription for Liberating a Nation in Pain. We can understand by the title what the book mainly deals with. The book was published in 2019 and in the book Lisa Marie openly talked about her struggles. She wrote “I’m not perfect. My father wasn’t perfect, no one’s perfect. It’s what you do with it after you learn and then you try to help others with it.” You can just read those lines and know she had felt every word of it as she put it down on the paper. 

I personally do not know if it was an addiction that ultimately led to the bitter end but using someone’s death to make up a conspiracy theory to push anyone’s personal agenda is just wrong. Someone may or not believe in vaccines just like someone may or may not be a moron but we all should have empathy in us. And this incident shows just how cold we have become as a society.
