Is Kylie Jenner's stardom in trouble with the "new" Instagram?
There is no doubt the Kardashians and the Jenners were once the undisputed queens of Instagram. But feelings have changed in 2022. Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner are not at all happy with the “new” Instagram. Instagram rose to fame as a photo-sharing app but with the recent success of TikTok, it seems like every platform is focused on TikTokisation.
TikTok’s short video format was an absolute hit and the app started appearing on everyone’s phones. Soon TikTok started boasting their humongous numbers and that meant only one thing. Instagram and YouTube had to introduce similar features. So, YouTube introduced Shorts, while Instagram came out with reels.

But the queens of Instagram did take kindly to the transformation. Kylie Jenner who is the second most followed account on Instagram put up a story “Make Instagram, Instagram again.” Now one would imagine change is good and after so many years it was about time Instagram evolved into something more. The issue that Kylie Jenner addressed she had with the TikTokisation of Instagram is she just wanted to see cute pictures for her friends. The Kardashians and the Jenners wanted the old Instagram so badly that there was also a change.org petition and that petition had over 100k signatures. I can’t say I’m surprised by so many signatures, both Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner both have a massive fan following. Other than that these two queens of Insta are not the only ones who were disappointed with the “new” Instagram.
Instagram was all about pictures but things have changed drastically in the last year. Instagram has been bombarding its users with reels. The reels are one of the many changes Instagram made but the reels are the most prominent one. So the Kardashians already were on the brink of breaking down when Instagram Changed things around but then Instagram went on and announced any video under 15 minutes will be shared as a reel. Yes, Instagram thought that was a way to go, they might have just announced that every video posted on Instagram is a reel.
Although I realize the changes are massive and many oppose the changes. But many embraced reels with open arms. Instagram has seen many new creators who gained popularity via their reels. Social media today is a mix of cringe and creativity, Insta reels proved just that. While the platform was trying to shove reels to all its users, most of the reels were cringe but some really stood out. So I am left with a question: Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner are scared the new content creators will overshadow them. I mean taking a picture and posting it on Instagram is much easier than making a reel.
But on the other hand, both Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian both have a huge fan following and that might cost Instagram. It is not the first time an app might face losses of users after Kylie Jenner disliked the revamp. Back in 2018 Snapchat faced a lot of negative feedback and following a tweet by Kylie Jenner where she admitted she doesn’t use the app that much, the app’s stocks took a nosedive. Snapchat lost $1.3 billion in value, and now that is some serious damage. But still, Instagram has not shown any willingness to take out the reels.
Honestly, I won’t blame Instagram, they are here to make money and reels have great potential on that front. Also, love and hate are part of the game and whenever there is something new, there will be a group of people who will be against it but eventually, all the hate fades out. But do you really think it’s the drastic change that has Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian mad? Or is it that they think they might get irrelevant in a new era of content creation?
