Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith: Inside Their Complicated Relationship

Hollywood super couple Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have spent many years showering the public with candid insights into their relationship. 

But a few days ago, in her new memoir, Worthy, Jada revealed the shocking news that she and her husband Will has been secretly separated since 2016. 

While she does not say about what is ahead for them, On Monday’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, she said “That’s still my man”. 

Many people have also rumored that Jada and Will have been in an Open Relationship, but in her book, Jada denied the union was ever an open marriage, instead calling it a ”relationship of transparency.” 

What is their “Relationship of Transparency”?

In her confession book, Worthy, Jada stated that she never felt the need to address all the rumors about their marriage in the media, including that they were separated and they were sleeping with whomever they chose, whenever they chose to. 

But, at the point when Jada and Will exchanged vows in 1997 and Smith pursued his goal of becoming the biggest movie star in the world, she faced many challenges as a mother, in her career, and at home.

She started being worried about their connection because she found her husband Smith “emotionally unavailable” while she was in a "chronic state of discontent." 

She was also worried about Smith facing “temptations”, while he was working with or being around the “most sought-after women in the world”. 

Because she had also experienced temptations herself as a woman in Hollywood. 

So to protect their relationship, she suggested a proactive solution with an agreement that she and her husband Will Smith would never be in a position to lie to each other. That’s the reason why she called their relationship a “relationship of transparency.” 

According to her agreement, it was never that you could go sleep with whomever you want, whenever you want, instead, it was that if any of them faced temptations, just trust each other to come together in partnership with the truth.

Talk and work as lifetime partners through them, so they can eliminate any possibility of “betrayal.”

Later in her book, Pinkett Smith admitted the agreement is "not a strategy of the faint of heart." Instead, she says the reason was that she was so young and didn't understand all that would come with this decision.

She further wrote that she definitely would make some adjustments if she could go back. She called it a decision she made with Smith so she didn't feel abandoned.

The Actress, Jada also wrote about her infamous 2020 appearance on Red Table Talk in which she confirmed that she had a sexual relationship with August Alsina while married to Will Smith.

She further wrote that she know now that she and Smith who appeared as a powerful couple will only be sharing the partial truth. And by this point, they had been separated for 4 years. 

Jada Pinkett Smith said that she wanted to reveal that during the show, but Will was not ready for the world to know this truth.  

In her book, she wrote that she doesn't consider an entanglement an affair. That's because her superstar husband Smith was aware of her involvement with Alsina, which eventually ended in 2018.

During the taping, she said Smith suddenly changed from their prediscussed plan of talking about how their relationship had changed and they were still figuring out what would happen next. 

But, she wrote that Smith made it seem like he somehow found out about her involvement with August Alsina as if Jada Smith was cheating and it had been a secret. 

And because of this, Jada said she feels hurt and betrayed by the way he portrayed her on Red Table Talk which is officially a Pinkett Smith’s show. 

She also wrote that even if everyone knows it, she is not going to throw Will Smith under the bus, she is willing to take the blame for the relationship, even though she knows that it is not fair.

In 2021, while Will Smith was promoting his own memoir, he admitted that he was unfaithful as well. 

What Would Happen Next?

Jada Pinkett Smith also disclosed that she and Smith went through multiple breakups. One happened shortly after they started dating when Smith briefly went back to his first wife Sheree Zampino, with whom he has a son, Trey, to try to reconcile.

In 2011, the popular couple also broke up after Pinkett Smith's 40th birthday. Their recent separation has been the longest, spanning from 2016 through today.

Because of this, they kept their long separation a secret as they were not sure about what was going to happen next, Pinkett Smith said.
