Sam Smith was misgendered at the Grammy’s 2023 and fans are not happy

On February 10th, the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony took place, in which several musicians were awarded for their outstanding contributions to the music industry. However, the event was not without controversy, as Sam Smith, a non-binary singer, was misgendered during the broadcast.

Sam Smith along with Kim Petras was also accompanied by Gottmik and Violet Chachki, who were also in their music video. Both of them are on RuPaul's Drag Race.

Misgendering is a form of discrimination that occurs when an individual's gender identity is not recognized or respected and can cause harm to the person's self-esteem and mental health. In Sam Smith's case, their gender was referred to as "him" instead of the preferred pronouns "they/them".

Smith, aged 30, has also stirred up a heated debate regarding the music video for their recent release "I'm Not Here To Make Friends". The video has received harsh criticism with many labeling it as "pornographic".

However, this mistake caused an uproar on social media, with many fans and allies of the non-binary community expressing their disappointment and frustration at the oversight.

One person reacted: “Everyone using the wrong pronouns for Sam Smith is bothering me.”

Another said: “Someone tell the reporters to use the right pronouns for Sam Smith !!!!”

The misgendering was particularly concerning given the fact that Sam Smith has been open about their gender identity and has been advocating for non-binary visibility and acceptance.

In 2019, Smith came out as non-binary and gender-queer. Earlier this year, in an interview, the musician expressed that changing their pronouns “felt like coming home.”

“Because it is who I am and it’s who I’ve always been.”

“Since changing my pronouns, it felt like a coming home. I wish I knew what the words were when I was in school because I would’ve identified as that in school,” they mentioned during an interview with Zane Lowe, on Apple Music 1.

The incident highlights the ongoing struggle for gender equality and the need for greater education and awareness of non-binary identities. It also serves as a reminder that everyone has a role to play in creating a more inclusive and respectful society, including those working in the media and entertainment industries.

Sam Smith responded to the misgendering on social media, expressing their disappointment but also acknowledging the progress that has been made in recent years in terms of visibility and acceptance of non-binary individuals. They also thanked their fans for their support and for speaking out against the misgendering.

The Grammy Awards organization has yet to issue a statement on the matter, but it is hoped that they will take this opportunity to address the issue and take steps to ensure that all individuals are treated with respect and dignity in future events.

In conclusion, the misgendering of Sam Smith at the Grammy Awards is a poignant reminder of the importance of recognizing and respecting individuals' gender identities. It is crucial that we work towards creating a society where all individuals are valued and treated equally, regardless of their gender identity.
