Why are McDonald's employees not "happy" about the adult Happy Meals?
McDonald’s is back in the news and this time the clown has hit all the nostalgic points. McDonald’s is all stocked with Happy Meals but this time it’s a treat for the adults. But this did not go very well, actually, it went too well for the fast food giant that led the McDonald’s employees that were Happy Meals to be not so happy. It all started on October 3rd. McDonald’s released the adult version of their Happy Meal which was called the Cactus Plant Flea Market Box. If the name is confusing you then let me give you a little backstory. The fast food behemoth in collaboration with fashion and lifestyle label Cactus Plant Flea Market reimagined their Happy Meal, but this time the Happy Meals were for the grown-ups.

The Happy Meal was available at restaurants, on the Mcdonald’s app, by delivery, and of course in the drive-thru. Customers were allowed to choose between a 10-piece Chicken McNuggets meal or a Big Mac meal, and the meal was complete with one of four toys. The promotions for the grown-up Happy Meal were on point, to such a point that chaos broke loose right when the Happy Meals were made available.
Many Mcdonald's employees reported the sudden rise in orders which has caused a lot of stress among employees. Many employees said the online promotions had spiked the nuggets and the Big Mac orders to increase by almost threefold which has led to the kitchens in disarray. And not only are more people ordering, but apparently, the orders from the customers were getting enormous. McDonald’s employees don’t joke around; they took to social media to provide us with proof of how bad the situation is. One employee took to TikTok to post a video of a chaotic McDonald’s kitchen. Whereas another shared an order of one customer which was 10 adult happy Meals and one order of six extra chicken nuggets. Now that is some big boy order.
Now the onslaught cannot be all about the burgers and the nuggets right, it had to be the toys. Each adult Happy Meal comes with one of the four McDonald's mascots: the Hamburglar, Birdie, Grimace, and Cactus Buddy! Let me tell you it’s all about the toys, always has been. There are a lot of folks who are reselling the toys and the price is steep. On eBay, a full set of all four toys cost more than $250. Now that should tell you about the market of McDonald’s Happy Meal toys.
A McDonald’s spokesperson released a statement to TODAY Food saying they had a feeling the adult Happy Meal would create a surge among customers. The spokesperson also claimed they are all prepped and ready to serve everyone during this limited-time promotion. Honestly, I don’t know how to feel when a McDonald’s representative claims they were prepared for all this while there are McDonald’s employees sharing videos of chaotic kitchens. But we cannot say this is the first time McDonald’s has shaken up the whole country with a limited-time promotion.
The most iconic limited-time promotion by McDonald’s in my opinion was their Szechuan sauce. And when they sold out “Rick and Morty” fans threw a hissyfit in stores. Yes, people were outraged because a limited edition dipping sauce was sold out. That also led to McDonald’s finally issuing a public apology to their customers. Yeah, the people really shook up the clown.
So have you taken a trip down memory lane with McDonald’s adult Happy Meals? Also, let us know what you think about the chaotic situation caused by a marketing stunt.
