Jim parsons talk about why Sheldon’s scene was cut from The Big Bang Theory

The Big Bang Theory might just be one of my favorite sitcoms, and when I look back I can’t even believe it first aired back in 2007. What they say is true I guess, time flies when you are having fun. I watched all 12 seasons of the show and re-watched them. If you do not know about the premise let me give a little backstory about the show. The show followed a group of socially awkward friends who are also geniuses. The show primarily follows the lives of Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter played by Jim Parsons and Johnny Galecki. In their friend circle, there are two more guys Howard and Raj, played by Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar. The majority of the show focused on the romantic relationship between Leonard and their neighbor Penny played by Kaley Cuoco.

But for me it was Sheldon who always had my attention and watching him grow through the seasons was just wonderful. In the 12 seasons, you can see him evolve from a robot to a kind and loving person. But today I will not focus on Sheldon’s growth, rather I want to speak about the pilot episode. When I think back to the pilot episode and see Sheldon now I get seriously confused. One particular scene that looked severely out of place was when Sheldon decides to donate his sperm. The scene was later cut from the reruns of the show. But Why? So, Chuck Lorre and Jim Parsons finally talked about why that scene of Sheldon was cut from the reruns.

So before sharing what was taken out let’s discuss what was the scene. In the scene, Leonard and Sheldon visit a “High IQ sperm bank” to make quick money for faster Internet, and it was Sheldon’s idea. I guess even geniuses come up with bad ideas here and there. Even though it was originally Sheldon’s idea, in the end, Sheldon backed out and the two went back home, where they met Penny for the first time in the hallway. But Chuck Lorre thought the scene did not belong and decided to take it out from the reruns.

Jim Parsons who played Sheldon said “At the time, the sperm bank scene didn’t bother me. Looking back, it was out of place, but there was no way for the producers to know….Nobody knew who Sheldon was yet, so the live audience accepted it for what it was. But it is confusing information now, and I get why Chuck took it out of syndication because the episode is much stronger and more special without it.”

While watching the scene helped me understand the relationship dynamic between Leonard and Sheldon, but I can understand why Chuck Lorre wanted to take the scene out. And if we see through Lorre’s perspective the series truly started when they met Penny for the first time. Honestly, I agree with him, their first encounter with Penny is still with me after 12 long seasons.

Another reason I agree with Lorre taking out the scene is how Sheldon grew in the series. His long journey to the heartwarming speech in the season finale was the best thing about the show. The trip to the sperm bank didn’t feel like something Sheldon would come up with, let alone go through with. But lucky for us, the writers did not write any more incidents with Sheldon that needed to be cut from the reruns. And we cannot be happier.
